Ft Hood shootings

Perseus, if you've been following this thread, you would have read the part where I said this does not appear to be an act of terrorism and an event where radical Islam seems to have played more of a role of being the symptom rather than the cause.

I don't think they'll find much incriminating evidence in the email. This guy probably knows better than to write sensitive information over email. The fact is, this guy did have ties to a radical Imam. If he did communicate over topics consistent with his work, it means that he possibly had some kind of unofficial working partnership with the radical Imam.
The news titles "Nidal Malik Hasan tried to contact Al Qaeda" are a bit misleading however.
But beyond that point there's too much speculation. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
OH, and as a US Army Major, communicating with a known radical is NOT acceptable. Before you go into talking about subject matters, any subject matters, in detail, you need to know who that other person is and check that he/she is not a person on a watch list of any kind.
Actually this is sort of what I was worried about. If he had talked about actual cases of his patients, even if it wasn't classified, that information would have been valuable for the enemy.

19K, sorry about your soldier's loss. Hopefully a swift execution of the shrink will help ease some of the pain.
Yeah there's a good chance that he just wanted to die and felt this was one way he could go out while taking a good dump on the Army.
As for the recruitment of suicide bombers, it's actually slightly different from the case of some hopeless suicidal manaic like the shrink. It has more in common with those suicide demonstrators who set fire to themselves in front of buildings of significance (I'll explain this one too in another thread maybe since I'm afraid it'll bring this thread too off topic?).
And as for harrassing of Majors... 19K is right, it's a very difficult proposition done by people who don't believe in ending their military contract with an honorable discharge.

This guy was nothing more than an idiot who knew exactly what he was doing, no PTSD, no physic problems, just one man who killed in the name of his god.

Imam Praises Alleged Fort Hood Shooter

November 10, 2009
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - A radical American imam on Yemen's most wanted militant list who had contact with two 9/11 hijackers praised alleged Fort Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan as a hero on his personal Web site Monday.
The posting on the Web site for Anwar al Awlaki, who was a spiritual leader at two mosques where three 9/11 hijackers worshipped, said American Muslims who condemned the attacks on the Texas military base last week are hypocrites who have committed treason against their religion.
Awlaki said the only way a Muslim can justify serving in the U.S. military is if he intends to "follow in the footsteps of men like Nidal."
"Nidal Hassan (sic) is a hero. He is a man of conscience who could not bear living the contradiction of being a Muslim and serving in an army that is fighting against his own people," Awlaki wrote.

True they will take the credit for acts. But by taking credit and praising these acts they promote the line of thought to other wack jobs. It's a propoganda campaign.

Yep and that form of Propaganda is used and employed by world powers, revolutionary organizations, and terror groups alike, nothing new, been used for the course of human history.

You think?................................I know, hot Nitroglycerin is more stable than a shrink.
I ahe a theory about whats gonna happen when he's able to answer questions, he'll either not say anything at all, or everything out of his mouth will be pro Islam and anti American
He'll get executed anyway. He's not gonna talk about it anymore. :bravo:

It's much better to hold a trial followed by a summary execution. The time it takes to go from the trial to the execution however, spoils it.

Stuff coming out that Hasan may have had more than a little contact with Imam Whackadoodle Awlaki........

It seems on the face of it Hasan holds very few cards in his defence. However, a few points to consider after further reflection:

1) Hasan will be face a military court, not a civilian one. This may sound worse but this isn't so. First of all instead of a lot of 'gung-ho' Texans for jury he will have the choice of being judged by members of his own rank or higher, perhaps this might involve other 'professionals' such as psychiatrists. I guess these may be more liberal in their reasoning and judgements. Secondly the military defence council have greater access to records than a civilian defence attorney.

2) The method of execution is by firing squad, there has not been a military execution for 50 years.

3) He did try to avoid this situation arising by getting out, but was refused

4) Hasan has clearly been subject to harassment by his fellow soldiers due to his attitude to the war and perhaps his faith. In one case his car was vandalised and a religious sticker ripped of, costing $1000 of repairs. What if this incident was the tip of the iceberg? Is there a conspiracy of silence, and should these people not bear at least some responsibility for the incident?

OK all that is bleeding heart liberal stuff, if people don't 'fit in' they are fair game for intimidation, and this incident hardly justify the seriousness of the crime, but now for the crunch bit which seems to have been completely forgotten.

5) Does Hasan know anything the army would like to keep under wraps? Surely he would have been a focus of information for a large range of dirty incidents even the army don't know about, due to his confidentiality agreement with his patients. What could the army do to stop this information becoming public, threaten him with Court Marshal? You can't threaten to kill a man being crucified!

6) What if (and this is speculative) he was retaliating against specific people who he didn't feel had sufficient remorse for 'undisclosed' incidents similar to Haditha, Ishaqi and Hamdania, as well as Abu Ghraib, and everyone else involved were simply caught up trying to stop him? The place sounds like a melting point of emotional trauma to me.

Soldiers nursing the mental and emotional scars of war have overwhelmed the central Texas base, the Army's largest. Cases of post-traumatic stress disorder quadrupled from 2005 to 2007....Hasan had spent six years dealing with the mental wreckage of war at the Walter Reed Army Medical Centre in Washington and, since July, at Fort Hood's Darnall Army Medical Centre.

The investigation should be regarding what happened and how this happened.

As for the punishment, nothing short of death will fit the bill. He shot and killed people who trusted him.

True, but I think that the shooter may have had an intent of dying himself that day, I don't think that an execution may exactly be a punishment for him at this stage.

If executed the method of execution will be lethal injection carried out at MDB Leavenworth.

I don't know why that is the new preferred method of execution these days.....but if it's a matter of cost, the government can use my tax dollars to draw and quarter the son of a b***h! I'll gladly donate to the cause.
