Georgia "Invaded" By Russian Forces

And of course it would happen during my prime... I'll be damned if I don't live to have a legal beer. Hasn't history told us enough of what happens when things like this happen? Why can't we all just realize we have it great as it is, and be done with it... What's with this constant need to impress somebody, or bully somebody, or be bigger and badder than somebody?

"It's not that important and it's none of our business anyway" is probably precisely what the French and British felt when Nazi Germany was doing its thing with Czechoslovakia. We just never learn.
Ignoance is bliss...

It's just human nature. It's dumb, but it's human nature. And you won't be the only one out there fighting if it comes to that... :rambo:

The Russians, if they wanted to do so, could recapture almost all land that they held prior to the Soviet collapse in 1991 with relative ease. The only military east of the Iron Curtain (with the exception of East Germany, which joined with the west) that is even remotely westernized and upgraded from what the Soviets gave them is Poland. The only thing stopping them is the West.

This invasion is Russia testing the waters for more advances, similar to Germany's moves on Czechoslovakia. Once they realize that the west won't do anything but say "That's not nice," they'll continue with another country and continue to bulk up their military. The Ukraine. Belarus. Kazakhstan. Who knows?

The Russinas also control all natural gas supply to Western Europe. They could simply squeeze the west to death by cutting that supply and with lands east such as the Ukraine or Belarus, they could also put enough grain into the market to have an influence on prices to the point that they could casue an economic collapse in Europe.

I don't like this one bit.

My question is why? Why does Russia want to be big? Hell, the United States is smaller than they are and we're still more powerful. It's not all about the size of the boat, as they say.

It's the same problem the Romans had; they had problems with C2 because of the size of their territory.

With all this global warming I might want to look at some real estate especially if it is on a lake and fairly remote.

The terrority gains are merely a plus to the fact that when they have Georgia they control the BTC pipeline.

Russia attacked Georgia because it attacked South Ossettia! Picking up US and Israeli weapon systems manuals and other bits of military hard ware is just an a perk you act like that little pipeline is the only pipeline in the world that feeds the west you can not possibly pump enough oil though that pipeline to fill all of the fuel needs of Europe if the Russians want to they could destroy it at any time.

Putin was not going to allow Russian Citizens to die on his boarder. When the South Ossetians gained a Russian Passport Georgia lost that provence period.

It was a foolish move now they are paying the price for it. You can't be stupid when your dealing with the Russians or they will eat you alive.

Note, however, that it looks better when you take over a pipeline than simply blowing it up. And it is the only pipeline the Russians didn't control, so they wanted the full domination to totally shut off the west and be able to wreak havoc on prices.

Other Guy,

Let me get this straight without the pipeline Russia would not have acted with NATO on the boarder and all the insults they have endured over the past 10 or so years?

Here is the situation Georgia lost when Russia passed out pass-ports to the citizens of South Osettia, that was it CLEAR MESSAGE these folks are off FREAKING LIMITS to Georgia, at that point CHECK-MATE game Over! Russia said screw with them and we will kick your Butt. Georgia attacked anyway even though they had to know Russia would move in. Looking truought the smoke screen Russia gave those SO folks citizenship to prevent such an attack and if such an attack happened Russia could move in and do what it did. This situation was set up by a Chess player see how masterfull it was done. On the one hand Georgia would have to accept the loss of SO, and live with it or they could attack in which case Putin would roll in and let them feel the Russian Lash. Russian leadership set up a Win-Win situation.

All we can do is talk if we (the west) takes any action it will be a long cold winter in Europe. I bet terrorists will blow that pipe line to boot.

Russia will pull back they your entire arguement will be nullified. It may take 6 months but they will RTB (return to base) There is security and public safety to think about plus capturing and carting away all those cool American and Israeli weapon systems to think about.

WHERE THE HECK ARE ALL THOSE ADVISORS?

Georgia put themselves in a 50/50 situation at the very beginning of this conflict - however the whole Georgian situation now reminds me more and more about the Balkans - a complete political and military mess people gives a rats ass in understanding since there are six versions of the truth what's going on there.

Let's just say that New Mexico wants to secede and join Mexico. We send soldiers in to quell the rebellion, right?

That's what Georgia is doing in South Ossetia. Even if it is seperatist, it is still officially part of Georgia. It's their country.
And if Kosovo wants to secede from Serbia... Serbia sends soldiers... Kosovo is still part of Serbia...
