What War Would You Have Been In?

Wolf - young man you have apologised quite enough. Although veterans here would wish to protect you, you are still nevertheless entitled to your intention to be a US marine if that is your ambition. I am sure you have taken on board the advice given you here. After all, this is a military forum, and while all wars are undesirable, young men like yourself demonstrate in many ways the best we have among us. So stand tall in the face of criticism .

What the veterans have to say regarding this thread is relevant, but you obviously had no intention to disrespect any of the fallen, far from it.

I am sick and tired of war. It's glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for venegance, for desolation. War is hell.

William T. Sherman
There are actually several version of that one floating around.. :smil:
(you can't beat me on mil quotes.. )

"WAR IS HELL"
"There is many a boy here today who looks on war as all glory,
but boys, it is all hell."
or
"Some of you young men think that war is all glamour and glory,
but let me tell you, boys, it is all hell!"
-General William T. Sherman,
speech 1880 from which we derive the phrase "War is hell"

I've also found the same version as you, but it's actually from a book:

"I am sick and tired of war. Its glory is all moonshine.
It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard
the shrieks and groans of the wounded
who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
War is hell."
From "On Killing" by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

How about this one:-

Help - I think they're coming!

Del Boy. 1954.

Seriously - I agree with all that War is Hell, and usually other people's sons are sent to fight it. The amazing thing is that we still have a steady stream of brave young volunteers, who I guess save us from complete conscription; like the guys returning from Afghanistan and itching to get back. Very hard for us ordinary mortals to understand.

Would I recommend to my grandsons ? Very definitely not. Do I have friends with professional soldier sons serving a number of tours there - Yes. It's the existence of the wars themselves that is the problem, not the finest among our young men coming forward.

Am I saying all the wrong things? Please tell me and shut me up. Thank you, I would appreciate it.

Some of my friends must be crazy then, they joined for the express purpose of seeing action. Actually now that I think of it they are literally crazy, heh.

War is hell.

Although, I will be serving the Canadian Army 20 or so years so I'll get my fair share of it. I wish not to go in any previous wars because I bet I'll be in the ones to come.:army:

The war i would have been in would have been WW2, to fight for ur country and against oppression, I surely would've been in WW2

War!!

When i joined army with 18 years old, i was looking at the war like just another way to have fun. Then i did not realized what monster war is.

I do not regret that i made decision to enlist, and defend my country.
It was like haze, people died, beeing wounded, and i was shocked just for the second, and then i was back C. Sheen in Platoon!

Then after 12 years, since my last combat expirience, came Afghanistan, war again. I was totaly aware with 35 years , what should i expect, i what can i loose. And i can tell you, that i suffer more trauma, from couple of IED, s and 7 month tour, then for 4 years of my country homeland war, with shelling, tanks, planes and other things.

So war is strange thing, and every one suffer, from it, that is thrue.

What do you think, my brothers in arms.

Does anybody know?

Does anybody know where i can find a thread which is talking about, ptsd, and family issues.

Or we can open a new one, if somebody is interesting.

Stay well my brothers in arms!

Fighting won't end. It's just the old guys who seem to do more fighting now.

As for PTSD... I think some of the other members here can help you with that. A few have been to war.

Probably WWII, gotta fight to defend your country.

If not that, the Napoleonic Wars. Yeah i'm that kinda guy :shoothea:

While the thread I am linking you to is more about officers, there is an excellent side discussion on the effects of PTSD and family reorientation in the midst of extended deployments:

In addition, our friend Team Infidel has posted a dozen or more news and related articles about PTSD, combat fatigue, separation anxiety, and issues facing families of returning troops.
