5.56X45mm, you look like an intimidating bloke. In Australia most gun store owners are old folks.
 
Everyone that works at my store is either currently in the National Guard or the Reserves. Or they're priors like me. Or they're Reserve Police Officers or Fire-Fighter/Para-Medics. Oh and we're all under 26 years old. The only one that's old is the boss. Well at work I always have a Glock 22 (.40S&W) with a Streamlight M3 Tactical Light and a 29 round magazine on me. Plus a BUG (Back Up Gun).

Interesting, I notice quite alot of americans who own firearms have military/government service. Its good to hear many are young, for that will be sport/hobby going. In Australia, Not many young folks are participating except people from the country (80% of Australians live in cities). I guess thats why alot of firearm stores in Aus are controlled by the older folks.

Also in Aus, you must have your firearms in a vault with an alarm system if you own more than 10 firearms. Im curious... do you store your firearms in a safe or something?

I keep them in two safes. The pistols are in little zippered cases so I can stack them one on top of the other. And sometimes I do have a barracks in my house. When my friends come over, they bring their toys too. :twisted:

It's mostly the same here too. Expect those that that have never fired a gun before and go into a governemtn type job Military/law enforcement really like the idea of gun ownership. But i'm a odd sort. I live in the city yet I hunt, fish and, camp. And so do my friends.
 
Your house will surely be the robbers nightmare by the sounds of it. :)

In Australia, alot of blokes i meet in the range are ex-military or people who are in it for the sport. We even get military history enthusiasts.

So out of my collection, what is illegal and what would you need a permit for.

And now, I'm not rich. Half of my collection came from someone very colse to me. When he passed away. He had only one son and his boy didn't like guns. But since I was basicly part of the family. He left them to me. The other half I've gotten through good deals, work, or payment for work done of other firearms. But I do have one firearm that became part of my collection in a special way. The East German Makarov was a bring back from my time in Afghanistan. I picked it up in Kabul and mailed it home piece by piece. Expect the lower frame which is illegal. I brought that home by smuggling it in my overseas bag.
 
Well this is how it goes in Aus. I own a level A&B licence right now. Firearms are split up into different classes.

A = airgun; rimfire rifle, such as a .22 (other than semi-automatics); shotgun (other than pump action or semi-automatics); any combination of shotgun and rimfire rifle.

B = muzzle-loading firearm; centre-fire rifle (other than automatic or semi-automatics); any combination of shotgun and centre-fire rifle; a black powder, ball-firing cannon.

** A & B licences are easy to get but you must be in a firearm club to have it**

C = semi-automatic rimfire rifle with a magazine capacity of up to ten rounds (such as a self-loading .22); a semi-automatic shotgun holding up to five rounds; a pump action shotgun holding up to five rounds; a tranquiliser gun

** Must be in a Firearm club or use it for a source of income **

D = semi-automatic rimfire rifle with a magazine capacity of up to ten rounds; a semi-automatic shotgun holding more than fiverounds; a pump action shotgun holding more than five rounds; a semi-automatic centre fire rifle; any other firearm prescribed within this category.

** Only allowed if needed for main source of income**

E = a machine gun that is a longarm; a tear gas gun or projector; a sawn-off shotgun with a barrel less than 75 centimetres long; cannon (other than those in Category B); mortars; bazookas; rocket-propelled grenades or similar large calibre military firearms; a cannon which is not a black powder ball firing cannon; any other firearm prescribed for the purposes of this category.

** Only allowed for security **

Hand Gun = a firearm that is reasonably capable of being either carried or concealed about a person or raised and fired by one hand or does not exceed 65 cm in barrel length.

** Must be in a firearm club to own this or security **

Storing firearms is a pain in the arse as well. You need a safe and the higher the class, the more tougher the storing laws.

Types of firearms licence
If you are 16 years or over and have or use a firearm (except under immediate supervision of a licence holder) you need a firearms licence.

A Category A Firearms licence allows you to have and use sporting type shotguns and rifles. You also need this licence if you are aged 16 and 17 years and wish to buy or use an airgun. Category A licences are valid for 10 years. A licence holder will require an endorsement to:

Own pistols (B endorsement)
Collect firearms, or stage theatrical performances involving firearms (C endorsement)
Own or possess military style semi-automatic rifles or shot guns (E endorsement)
A Category D Licence is for arms dealers who buy, sell or make firearms by way of business. This licence is valid for one year.

A Category V Licence is for a person visiting New Zealand and is valid for 12 months, or when the person leaves (which ever is shorter). Applicants must show they are a bona fide shooter in their own country.

No, I don't have much contact with the Soviet weapons.

The M1 Garand, M1A1 Carbine, M16, M4, M256 "Cannon", 870, M60, Kar 98K are ones I get the most contact with.
