The "war on terror" is a "mistake",

It's like this, even in countries the West mistakes for having become "westernized" like Korea and Japan, there are significant differences. I could go on forever about how freedom can actually never exist in these countries but it'd take a long time and I don't think anyone would really understand. But let me put it this way: it's no coincidence that these two countries have some of the highest suicide rates in the developed world. And there is a reason why the women would rather marry a foreigner and get the hell out. Hell, it's not even about the money. The guys here have money and often the foreigners they marry are usually poorer than the average guy here.
And this old culture thing which stifles people and restricts freedom is a long way from going away. It's probably not going to change in perhaps a thousand years (after all, we're talking about a train of thought that was organized and compiled roughly 500 BC).
So if a society is all about living in the hills and blasting the hell out of each other, I have no reason to believe they're going to change their ways any time soon.
You know if you actually give out aid in a Muslim country, they don't thank you, they tank God. It's Inshallah. It's God's will that you are there handing out the goods. It's not your doing. God sent you and you had no choice but to follow suit. Which means after you just shot medicine into their kid's arm and gave them a sack of rice, they can still very much slit your throat.
You're not going to change cultures or ways of life.

Weer gonna be here for a while mate :) cause you have a lot of typing to do to convince me since I know 54 manes on the Iraqi collation causality list, 1 from the U.S.S.Cole, 6 Marines form a barracks in Lebanon, And a friend who wheels himself around because of a man who attacked him in the name of Allah.
Basically in 45 years I have yet to meet one in person who doesn't want to kill me

Wolfen, I'm not going to try to convince you. You've had experience of life, different to mine, but experience nonetheless.

The important thing is that we're talking, albeit via the ether. The main thing is finding common ground and working from there. I'm not saying that it works with everyone, but we should always try. I too have lost a close friend to terrorists, I take comfort in the fact that he was doing his job & I hate the fact that he was cut down like a dog, but the reality is that all servicemen & women have chosen a profession which puts them in harms way and sometimes your number is up.

At the end of the day, terrorists are criminals & must be prosecuted under the law in whichever country the crime has been committed - whether you or I agree with that country, its laws and its governement. Where a govt doesn't exist then the "civilised" world should try to help them find their own national identity. It may not mesh with our view of the world, but in the long run that nation may prove to be a better ally.

What is needed, speaking from my armchair, is a coherent approach that is focussed on each of the terrorist groups, which isolates them from their perceived power base and is backed by stregth - the iron fist in a velvet glove. Currently, we have a velvet fist in an iron glove, which is not the way to win friends and influence people.

That makes more sense than a lot of stuff a lot of people have said.

off-topic the next person that says or even thinks I am, was or ever will be an MP will be banned for a week:).No, really.

You do realize my job was, and for one month a year is, a tank commander?

ACtually no I wasn't aware of that, but I DID know you weren't that word that will get paople banned.

I kinda sometimeas wish I'd been in the Army or Marines and the tank driver :)
