Shoes on the Danube Bank in Budapest: The Memorial and the Holocaust

The Shoes on the Danube Bank is one of the world’s most recognized Holocaust memorials. How did Hungary’s once-flourishing Jewish community reach the catastrophe of 1944? Why did the persecution intensify after the German occupation, and what changed when the Arrow Cross Party seized power in October? My new article follows this history from the Jewish communities of Buda and Pest through the deportations, the mass shootings along the Danube, and the trials that followed after the war. I photographed the Shoes on the Danube during my visit in September 2021 and put the historical research together with archival images, recommended sources, and practical advice for visitors.

As always, I welcome corrections, questions, and recommendations for sources I may have missed.
