Well most of the big industrial names in Korea do more than just make cars.
But yeah it's the car company. When South Korea used the M-16, Daewoo was the main manufacturer.
Obviously the clip intake is almost identical to the M-16. Apparently the gas blowback system has a few things in common with the AK family. Maybe they felt this was more combat reliable.

looks pretty good a cross between an M16 and the old SLR
actually the C7 A2 is being used operationally as you can see in the picture along with the new C9 (minimi) which is the para version
