It seems they aren’t !

“English banknotes are not legal tender in Scotland. Scottish notes are not legal tender in England or Scotland. Debit cards, cheques and contactless payments are not legal tender anywhere”

Technically only Royal Mint coins are legal tender everywhere.

What is legal tender?

Many people are confused about this – it is more about settling debts than how you pay for things in shops
