A RADICAL Muslim seminary in India said to have inspired the Taliban has issued a fatwa, or edict, against terrorism in a meeting attended by thousands of clerics and students.
The Darul Uloom Deoband, a 150-year-old institute controlling thousands of smaller Islamic seminaries in India, vowed on Saturday in New Delhi to wipe out terrorism.
"Islam rejects all kinds of unjust violence, breach of peace, bloodshed, murder and plunder and does not allow it in any form," said senior rector Habibur Rehman.
Teachings of the Deoband school and its strict interpretation of Islamic law have spread as far as Britain and Afghanistan.
Thousands of clerics and students cheered as Mr Rehman read out a statement: "The religion of Islam has come to wipe out all kinds of terrorism and to spread the message of global peace."
Analysts called the meeting a significant step towards dealing with terrorism and bringing relief to India's 140 million Muslims, many of whom feel the acts of some have tarnished the community as a whole.

This is huge because its not coming from moderate or liberal elements within Islam but from one of the most radical fundamentalist hotbeds of Islamic thought. My head reels at the implications... good on 'em for taking the first step in the right direction in 50 years. It is widely acknowledged that the teachings from this particular school were formative in Osama Bin Laden's mental constructs. Time for others to stand up and be counted.

How important could this be, Bulldogg! Just the very medecine the doctor ordered. Let us hope it will be effective in the right places; it could possibly be the 'open sesame' we have waited for. Everything then becomes possible.

Hi,

Deobands Don't have much of a fan following after them Period ( though they have schools in Uk , India And some other western countries that's about it ). It started in response to British colonialism in India , now a days all they do is Issue high profile fatwas like this one.

Between 1992 and 2002 Most of their Their school in Pakistan were looted and taken away from them , their leaders thrown out Some killed as they were considered Un-Islamic.

Peace
