"I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast; for I intend to go in harm's way." - John Paul Jones (1747 - 1792), Letter, November 16, 1778
This has been one of the unofficial mottoes for the Unites States Navy for a very long time and goes to the core belief that the most important aspect of our sea power is our ability to respond to ANY incident in the world in a short period of time with the necessary resources to resolve any issue.
This ability is what has made the modern navy all that it has become - fast, agile, powerful - with a resolve to win which has made them a power to be reckoned with in every corner of the world.
