you're right, of course. sorry if i seemed to over-react. in a former life, for a number of years, i was a journalist, myself, and i tend to pour out editorials regarding what i think as if i'm building a case for something--which i'm not. i'm trying to figure this thing out, myself, and i tend to think in print (when i'm unable to communicate verbally). i am constantly struck by the contrasts in these countries.
I had dinner with a colleague tonight, a Middle East expert, and he describes my situation here--a single American woman, a professor--as existing in this society as a sort of quasi-man, rather than as a woman in the culture (that's, of course, unless i'm mistaken for a Jordanian, which i often am). i hadn't thought about it that way before, but it feels right.
