During the meeting, the two sides described expansion of defense cooperation as an indication of the political resolve of Tehran and Damascus for developing ties.

In the first round of talks, the two ministers also explored avenues for the further deepening of defensive and military cooperation and ways of accelerating implementation of the two countries' agreements.

Prior to the start of talks between the Iranian and Syrian military delegations, Iran's Defense Minister Brigadier General Mostafa Mohammad Najjar was given an official welcome by his Syrian counterpart Lieutenant General Hassan Ali Turkmani.

The Iranian minister and his entourage arrived in Damascus Friday night on a three-day visit, which takes place in response to Turkmani's trip to Tehran last June.

During the trip, General Najjar is scheduled to attend talks with senior Syrian officials, including President Bashar al-Assad to discuss expansion and deepening of bilateral ties and exchange views about regional and international issues.

The two sides are also scheduled to endorse several Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and review the agreements already concluded by the two countries.

IMHO this is a bad omen. For a long time they have been vying AGAINST each other for influence in Lebanon. If they can see fit to bury the hatchet and cooperate it is NOT good for the concept of peace in the Middle East. If they can work together then Shia and Sunni coalitions are not far behind. This might seem preferable in the short term for countries like Iraq but it would spell trouble for the rest of the world.
