The Canadian military has recently adopted the G-wagon as its jeep to replace the Iltis... I know that the G-wagon is used by many countries right now and I'm wondering what you guys think about it,

We use the MB 240/290 GD in the Norwegian Army.
The MB 240 is ok on roads, but pretty useless in terrain (and steep hills).
The engine is too small, so it's not easy to manoeuvre if you fill it up with gear and soldiers..
The 290 is a bit better, I kinda like that one actually..

We do also have several different "special" versions of it, like armored versions and ambulances.
 
I'd say good buy, our cops and the military uses them along with hummers.
The compressor in the engine should help at solving the problems Redleg mentioned.
 
If nothing else, they can't possibly be any worse then the Iltis. I still don't like the idea of giving them to reserve units for armoured Recce though.
 
We use the G-Wagons for years, and they are very reliable.
they are designed to move in narrow forest paths, and not for speeding over plains, so the motorisation is quite ok...could be better, but its ok
 
Well I am in the midst of being qualified on our G-Wagon or LUVW (Light Utility Vehicle, Wheeled) right now, seems pretty capable, Recce platoon and sniper platoon are adopting them as our main vehicles... I'm hoping to be a gunner on one. We will mount the GPMG on them I am pretty sure...

probably the same reason many countries haven't bought them, too big, too thirsty, too american, just generally not the right vehicle for the job the country has in mind
 
Well, The Humvee can be to big, thats the problem. A lot of the countries we go to have very narrow streets, or they are jammed with locals, so a more narrow vehicle is better suited for that. Plus technology is always changing, I'm not sure how modern the Humvee is anymore. And if you look at some of the American specialist units, I believe the Rangers and Force Recon are using Land Rovers instead of Hummers for certain tasks, the G-Wagon is more like a Land Rover.

Well, that's why you run an M1A2 down the road to crush everything that's in the way

I'd say that Hummers could still be useful under most circumstances, because they're capable of taking a ton of abuse and still bringing the fight to the enemy. But I agree, in 3rd world countries or even in crowded cities, the HMMWV is just too large a vehicle to be truely effective, they dont turn as sharply and they are gas-guzzlers.

Although, I haven't heard of many a HMMWV being flipped by an IED or RPG (not saying it hasn't happened, but it's HARDER to do). I'd say HMMWVs still do their jobs magnificently, and they're adaptable too (.50 cal, 105mm Grenade Launcher, TOW Missile, SLAMRAAM, Avenger and Ambulance to name a few), they are so adaptable and well fit, that according to Military.com/Soldiertech, the US Army is experimenting with a new variant HMMWV that uses a spread-focus laser beam to detonate IEDs and Mines from a distance in Afghanistan and is being deployed to Iraq currently:
