Attack plane crashes in north Russia, both pilots survive

MOSCOW, June 17 (RIA Novosti) - A Su-24 all-weather attack aircraft crashed on a runway on Wednesday in the Murmansk Region of north Russia, but both pilots ejected safely, a Russian Air Force spokesman said.
"There are no fatalities or destruction on the ground," Lt. Col. Vladimir Drik said.
A Defense Ministry official said a technical malfunction could be to blame for the crash, and that the plane had burnt completely after the accident.
The Defense Ministry and the Air Force command set up a commission to investigate the crash.

A 70s cold war striker not interceptor a poor man's F-111, Kmart poor. Russia did upgraded a number of to Su-24M or Su-24M1, the actual numbered isn't known. There might be a Su-24m2 but the Russian upgraded project seems to have ended, can't seem to find anything its still going.

Libya, Iran, and a few others are still users but I think Algeria is the biggest user besides the Russians. The Su-34 if ever finished is suppose to replace the Su-24 but with only 2 or 3 reported Su-34s made in past three years its a pretty safe bet that program is closed. Some sort of production lines were made I have a Russian friend who helps me with Russia news somtimes but even says its gone cold. I assume with funding the lines can open but looking at a few things its basically a ten year old design now

Russia could have cut cost by going to an all Flanker force and cut the Su-24, Mig-31, and stop production of that oversize Su-34 Flanker. I can't see producing this aircraft anyway is it going to drop LGB any better then an upgraded Flanker can?

I think the whole concept of aerial heavy bombardment is slowly fading away and becoming a thing of the modern past. Why load up a 70,000+ lbs bomb truck, tons of precious fuel and two fine pilots and risk both getting caught (larger RCS) and lives and a more expensive airframe when you can do the same job with a decent UCAV with hi-precision ammo at 1/5th the cost?

Isn't the world all hysterical and about avoiding collaterals now?

As far as you know, Rock, how's Russia doing on UCAV developments?

The bear's still yet to put something up against the Global Hawk, me thinks?

Not well Russia has many problems in so many areas as far as production, service, readiness, training, and more. I would come across too much as a Russian bash-er if I formed a list. Flip it do some searches for Russia military finished projects and let me know how you make out?

I think it'd be a lot more time-efficient if we had a Russian member here who's knowledgeable on such matters.
