I don't think it is a lost cause... it's just the next battlefield. If you don't contain this problem over there, it sure as heck is going to find a way to come over here.
And we have to stop applying political correctness to damn laws that are meant to curb terrorism. All it's more effective at doing is keeping out skilled workers who could in fact help against the war on terror. If anything, help the economy. If you block out these resources from reaching your country because of some damn terrorists that don't share the same country, ethnicity, religion etc. the terrorists are in fact being handed a victory that perhaps they did not even foresee.
