Topic: Unconventional Warfare and the US Armed Forces

Hi All

Have just finished reading the excellent analysis of UW titled "Afghanistan and the Troubled Future of Unconventional Warfare".

Has anyone read it? If so what did you think of its claims?

My interest is in script research for my DVD series on the Australian SAS Regiment which is fighting the Taliban. I want to say something about the nature of the war there.

Best wishes

Unconventional warfare SF etc is only troubled because conventional commanders misuse their assets. Even when "Operators" are made Commanders, McC in Astan they are operators in name only. What did McC have? A minute in an ODA after he was Long Tabbed and the rest at B&C level, then some stints at the the Ranger Regt.

Another member here has opined and I agree , we need a Sgt from 22 to command in Astan. Someone who actually understands the meaning of unconventional warfare, not a ticket puncher.

Read "Learning to eat soup with a knife".

It has been used as the bible on COIN and UW by some commanders in country.
I have read it and think it has itīs points.
IMO it also have itīs weakspots.

What is your background?
Have you been in the Regiment or do you just like to write about them?
Have you interwieved any AD members who are/have been in country?

Your ball.

I believe that the problem is that we turned wars into... some kind of technical problems.

We have people asking "how" rather than to ask "why".

The question isnt "how to fight in an unconventional war?" but "why should we fight an unconventional war?"

Soldiers start to behave like Mercenaries and their commanding officers start to act like warlords from another era, from dark ages...

When you wage war on a people, a tribe... In particular when these people have inferior firepower. Guerrilla and terrorism appear.

To use these "unconventional" tactics... You need extremely motivated individuals. They dont really follow a central command. So, there is no leadership to destroy, as the leadership is always an idea that can survive bullets... Like social justice, god's will, independence etc...

If we look carefully, we will see that wars against guerrilla forces are mostly wars against individuals. Against individualism if you want.

Some people are building an "empire". And they have no room for some people in their ideal world. These people can be good or bad people, it doesn't matter... They just dont fit in the picture and someone wants them out.

So I say that if they are still fighting you when you have superior firepower, then it's time to go home. You are not fighting in self defense and it's called aggression.

I love you too 03.

But honestly, you have a weird behavior... Arrogant, insulting... You act like a brute, like a big bully.

It's this kind of people who start conflicts... You are so sure of yourself... You think that you are the only one holding the truth.

I can recognize a colonial war when I see one. And people kick out invaders using guerrilla warfare. Because it's the only way.

How your country gained it's independance from the Brits? by asking politely? By conventional warfare?

No, they got slaughtered when they faced their enemies face to face... And then, they used guerrilla tactics to soften the enemy and build a significant force, and once victorious, they changed their status from bandits/rebels/criminals/terrorists to liberators/soldiers/patriots etc...

You dont like my trailer load of WTF? Well, I'm not here to please you buddy.

Even you're history of tactics used in the American Revolution sucks.

Hell you're history of tactics and understanding of militray science as a whole is laughable, or would be was it not so sad in that you actually believe you have an understanding.

You have no real world experiance. You have no basis for all your high and mighty opinions and you discard the opinions of people that have lived it because your silly little self hasn't divined what they are saying by your magic oracal, tarot cards, or crystal ball or the magic eight ball or where ever you come up with your half baked schemes theories and notions.

Your mental masturbation seemingly derived from catostrophic amounts of video games, is as useless as tits on a bull skippy.

Opinions? Sorry, I've heard a few opinions, but you dont share much...

Oh, maybe you are confused. You think that you are actually saying something? Well, let me tell you that what you are writing is actually insults and silly mockery.

Not really a civilized opinion. Why should I care about your opinion?

First thing I should be doing is teaching you some manners... And then, maybe we could speak.

And you are really boring me with your video games mockery... I enjoy video games. So what? I never pretended to be an experienced military thinker because I finished a video game...

And excuse me if I'm not at your level of excellence... I'm surprised by your intelligence, your fine manners... Who would hate a nice person like you? I'm baffled by your tolerance... What a loving caring person you are...

Honestly buddy... I'm not the violent type. But you deserve a punch in the teeth for the way you speak to me.

If you think that men should bow to everyone who is stronger... Then you are a slaver. Believe it or not, but every human being have the duty and the right to protect himself, his freedom and his pride.
Men are smart enough to not mess with people who are stronger than them.

So, if you have to march on people who are much weaker than you... Then you should stop and think about how righteous is your cause...

Oh damn, I said think... You cant do that... forget that.
