South Africa World Cup 2010... and the shooting's already started
If you or anyone you know are considering attending the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa, think again.

Only 70 miles from a 2010 World Cup football stadium, a farmer's wife and a boy aged 13 learn to defend themselves with lethal weapons. They say thousands of white landowners have been killed by Zimbabwe-style marauders; their black rulers accuse them of belligerence and right-wing tendencies. Aidan Hartley reports on the war of words you won't read about in your World Cup holiday brochure.

By Aidan Hartley

Bella wakes. She hears a strangled, gurgling sound. Its the dog, she thinks.

Peter, theres something wrong, she says to her husband. Noises emerge from the room of her mother-in-law, whos 98 and confined to a wheelchair.
Its 1am. Bella gets up and walks out of the bedroom. In the hall she sees a young man who at first she thinks is her son. Except hes black, wears a balaclava and is pointing a gun at her.
He comes for me, says Bella, her hand before her tear-stained face.

Hes going to shoot me! I trip as I run back to the bedroom. Peter comes to the door but he has nothing in his hand, no pistol. I hear a gun go off. I hear my mother-in-law screaming. I lock the door and telephone my son. I tell him: I think they shot Pa!
Two men are outside the bedroom window with a rifle. She loads the pistol Peter keeps by the bed.

I take the gun and say, Come on! Ill shoot you!
Back in the hall she finds Peter dead, a trail of blood across the kitchen floor. Her mother-in-law Gerda is bruised and beaten.

I cant tell you how hopeless I felt, Bella says. I will see it in front of me for weeks, months, years.

I was weary about this decision from the beginning...

I had a friend in school who had recently arrived in Australia from South Africa. He told me all the awful things that go on. I seriously think that the whites in South Africa should form their own country or wind up like Zimbabwe.

What a shame.......

First Rhodesia and now South Africa....

Both were two well to do nations. Yes, they had their flaws but they were economically well to do. Had a good health care system, good educational system, currency, industry, government protection of rights, etc....

Is race related rule correct? No, of course not and neither is Apartheid. But that would have changed anyways.....

Rhodesia fell because of the western world's hate against them for some strange reason and South Africa has fallen also because of it. Sadly now both nations are being run by socialistic communist dictators.

BritinAfrica, you need to beat feet out of their ASAP and come on over to Sunny Florida or another fine conservative State like Oklahoma, Texas, Montana, etc..... We'll welcome you and yours with open arms and big hearts.

So we are passing 60 years of institutionalised racism off as a "flaw" now?

Rhodesia fell because 400,000 immigrants were running a country and denying the 4 million indigenous people the vote.

South Africa fell for exactly the same reasons.

Well I guess if noting else it is clear Florida produces some interesting drugs.

To be fair 70 miles is a fair bit of distance away. Wouldn't call it "only 70 miles," especially if you had to try running it. Considering that a Marathon is 26 miles.

Just don't try to fly a South African flag in your office.

Did I say that Apartheid was okay? Nope.... let me double check just to make sure.

Of course it's a flaw..... just as Jim Crow laws were a flaw in the USA. That has been corrected and last time I checked it's now happening the other way around in some places here in the USA.

I truly believe that both Rhodesia and South Africa would have been better off if their internal populations resolved their issues without international interference. Both the Soviet Union and Communist China supplied and supported the partisan movements in Rhodesia and the South Africa. Both nations had their issues and those issues would have been corrected by their own people just as the civil rights movement corrected many of the issues here in the USA.

Last time I checked.... New Zealand doesn't have a clean history either with the local populations. So how about you get off you high and mighty horse and step on down to my level.... or did you forget that am I minority within the USA? I deal with racism and race issues all the damn time.

Actually if I flew it many folks would think I'm flying it because I support Nelson Mandela. Hell, most folks don't even know what South Africa's flag looks like.
