This failure of Koffi Annan's might be more forgivable if he was a man of great accomplishment in the UN. Instead, to my understanding, he's blown a couple key events in the past.

Can someone around here can list me off some of his achievements? Or at least something positive.

Many people on the list did not know about it
Ah well that's the trick, isn't it? How many people, exactly? Who are they, and what are their positions?

But my opinion is that the UN should stay, and merely be "fixed". But even then I doubt it will act effectively in settling disputes. It's only purpose would appear to be aiding countries with medical aid, food, etc. And maybe allowing people to "talk", or something rather. Creating resolutions and holding them up is not their forte'

Happy face. wave, smile, wave.... that's how you do it....

Define "Fixed", there is a general concensus outside the US that "Fixed" equals back in the US pocket, if that is the case then:
a) I doubt Europe is going to allow that to happen.
b) If it does happen then the UN no longer serves any purpose and should be wound up.

The simple reality of concensus politics is that you will win some fights and lose others if you cant take the losses then perhaps you shouldnt be there.

If by "fixed" you mean something else then I would like to hear the idea's as I do agree the UN needs to change.

I don't have a four-point-plan for good happy success, but I would say something needs to be "fixed" when something this huge happens. People need to be fired, and certain mechanics of the UN should probably be revaluated. How the UN is going to examine itself honestly is beyond me.

But I hardly see how making the UN more competent will make it favorable to US policies, or put it in our "pocket".

the UN was just as cumbersome, just as tied with red tape & just as corrupt during the cold war as it is now,

the only difference?

the UN said "NO" to the US

everything was hunky dory when the US was able to use the UN to bludgeon the USSR around the head

MontyB has been banned for two days for flaming national leaders after many repeated warnings against doing so.

MadeInChina, or whatever your name is this week, do not cross that line, you are beyond the temporary ban stage.

We do not remind you of the forum rules and regulations or warn you about innapropriate behavior for our health, and ignoring these warnings will not be tolerated.

Yes, I agree with you chewie.
As do I.

I do have to wonder though whether the UN and its mandate need to revised for the "new" world after all this isnt the same world it was created to work in.

Nice rhetoric. Happen to have any facts to back that up? The Oil for Food fiasco is on record now. Show me a comparible one from the Cold War.
