I give two as I am in two countries

For France.

WWI was fought almost entirely in France almost all the worst battles (except Gallapoli) were fought here. There isnt a single village in France that does have a plaque listing thats villages KIA. France lost over a Million men KIA an entire generation lost. And While France was victorious it was irreversably changed.

For the USA

The American Civil War. Prior to this their were to competing paths America was following, this war set us on the path that made us what we are today. It was also the last American war fought on US soil.

What was out come for Britain after the American War Of Independence, well they went off and created Australia and New Zealand, and they did not do a too bad a job of that either.

For Canada the most important war was the War of 1812-14. If canada had not won this war, there would not be a canada. Know I now many americans will disagree and say that was not a war or that they didn't lose it.... but the ovre all victory was the british and there fore to canada.

After that, I would have to WW2, it created the nation the we are today. It developed canadian nationalism, put us on course to be part of G-8. We were a major player in the developement of Nato.

Of course we are going to disagree, it was a draw and America won the only battle that had a clear winner. (That of course being the Battle of New Orleans where a numerically inferior American Force obliterating the British invasion forces, something like 12 American deaths in that battle.) The War of 1812 had one overall objective, to end impressment of American sailors and merchants by the British and what do you know, that ceased to be. Also interesting to note that it was not till after Napolean was defeated and Britain was able to concentrate entirely on America that we started to win. (And yes, America was winning at the end, we defeated the Royal Navy's Great Lakes Fleet, stopped the British from attacking Baltimore, and as I already mentioned destroyed the British forces attacking New Orleans.

I guess this highlights the difference between our two nations. What is seen as one of the most important wars in Canada's history is in America seen as a minor skirmish with Britain, the most lasting impact of which was the creation of the Star Spangled Banner, if not for that we probably wouldn't study the war at all in school.

I always wonder why Canadians say that they won the War of 1812, I don't think Canada existed at the time. We were not taught that "we" won the French and Indian War, we were taught that the British won the war of 1812 since America did not exist at the time.

Well, there was the Japanese invasion of the Aleutian Islands in WWII, but don't worry, I don't include an invasion of four un-inhabited Islands either, especially since that was meant to divert forces away from Midway, but the only ones who were diverted were the Japanese.

Iran-Iraq war started in 1980, lasted 8 yrs and resulted in death of at least one million Iranians.

Chemical weapons used by Saddam against iranian troops still kill those who were infected during the 1980s.

Every war is important, and it is even more important that you don't lose it.
