He's joking.

Also it's quite well known that armies that are equipped for paramilitary uses (primarily riot control etc.) have proven to crumble in actual warfare. The training is different, the kinds of people involved are different and certainly (one would hope) the equipment is different.

Being so close to one another it's hard to believe they didn't. Besides, the US did have interest in keeping Mexico friendly and strong, especially when there were a lot of Communist guerilla activity in Central America during the Cold War.

Mexico isn't "SO" strong. It's doing alright.
A few nice pictures of their military doesn't mean they're a great military power or anything. You could get similar photographs off the Indonesian Army if you tried.
Remember there is SO much that you cannot take with a photograph. Leadership, professionalism of the NCOs and Officers, organization, communication, information gathering capability etc.
The Americans didn't want Mexico to be a country falling apart, having Communist Guerillas in actual danger of taking over the government.

The conflicts in the past were in almost ancient history.
Still many Mexicans bitter about their land the US now owns but no danger of an actual war breaking out between the two.

p.s. it's "what."

The Mx army is a army made for internal issues, such as counter insurgents, counter terrorism, anti-drug trafiicking, help to the people in natural disasters, etc. We dont have a force for external purposes, in our consttution is prohibited to send troops outside the country.

And yes, we have some influence from us military. The GAFE receive training from the 7th special forces groups in Fort Bragg, this was back in the Chiapas conflict. Now we have our own intructors. The same happened with Guatemala, the army SF receive trainig from the ''KAIBILES''specialized in anti-guerrilla operations ang jungle warfare. The mx army also has sent officers to Brazil, Chile for commando training.

The thing about "paramilitary operations" was just a thing replying to Asskicker. Because he was talking about troops experienced at riot fighting.

I'm quite sure the Mexican military is designed for anti-guerilla warfare and other actual combat operations.
