Hi everyone. i just joined the ARMY. active service. i ship out on June 16th 2004 to Ft.Sill oklahoma. My MOS is 13F Fire Support Specialist.

Welcome to the forum, Gregg. Good luck at Sill (I got a buddy going FAOBC there in August). If you have any questions, about 50% (give or take  ) of our members are redlegs.

thanx man i appreciate it! i just cant wait to do this thing. my son is excited too. he thinks daddy is gonna be G.I. Joe ....lol

'G.I. Joe', eh? Doesn't 'G.I.' stand for 'Government Issue'?

Anyway, welcome to the Forums.

Well....since I'm assuming "Fire Support Specialist" has something to do with Artillery, 'G.I' doesn't apply to you either way. Just don't tell your son that I said that. :m1:

G.I. is a nickname meaning Government Issue (you were correct in that part at least ;) ) coming from the fact that everything the Soldier used was issued, and generated the joke that the Soldier himself was "G.I." as well.

So "G.I." does (or soon will) apply to Gregg, Cadet.

yes fire support specialist has something to do with artillery. we find their targets for them...without being shot first.

First of all, welcome GreggK to the group and I wish you well in your military endeavors. Now about that Fire Support Specialist job. Hmm where shall I begin? First, never believe everything your recruiter tells you. Second, consider the job description.

A Fire Support Specialist is a member of the Army’s field artillery team. Artillery are weapons that fire large ammunition or missiles to support infantry and tank units in combat. The Fire Support Specialist is primarily responsible for leading, supervising or serving in intelligence activities such as target processing, division artillery and maneuver brigade.

The key words are "serving in intelligence activities". By definition, inetll calls for you to be up close and personal with the enemy without being detected yourself. If your good at it, you'll be OK. You will get the training you need to do the job. To excel at it is up to you.

If you haven't already, visit http://www.goarmy.com/jobs/mos/mos13F.asp for more information about the job you've chosen.
