The Great Wall.......of Iraq?

Yes it does contradict the Democracy the US is trying to build. One of the biggest mistakes the US have done in the reconstruction efforts was to form a government based on sectarian divide rather than national identity. This decision to build walls will only exacerbate the divide further.

The Great Wall....... of Iraq

Topic: The Great Wall.......of Iraq?

The postings of WnxRouge and CABAL are touching on a theme which has many sides. Is this really a question of security or democracy? "This decision to build walls will only exacerbate the divide further" is a statement which can be queried.
I was living in Germany when the wall between the GDR and the BRD was built. In the East, they were proud of it, in the West cries of horror were heard. Both sides claimed to be democratic, neither really were. The East took their orders from Russia and the West from the USA.
At the time the wall was pulled down, there were cheers on both sides because of the so-called reunification. (So-called, because large parts of Germany from which more than 11 million Germans had been deported, remained in the hands of Russia and Poland.)
It may be news for some people living outside of the now smaller Germany(compared with 1937), to here that many citizens of the former communist area of the country, would like to see the wall rebuilt!
They claim, they were better off under communist rule. Not that any individual had very much to say in those days - the Party was considered always right - but that everyone had a place of employment, the social services were available for all and the team spirit under the population was higher.
In the West, the system is capitalist, each person seeing that he or she gets as much as possible for themselves. This system is proclaimed to be democratic, democracy however is described as being: "Government for the people, through the people, by the people." In which western country is this true?
In Germany this is certainly not the case. The guaranteed human rights of the millions of displaced persons mentioned above, for example, have been deliberately ignored by all political parties.
It would be easy to give many examples of discrepancies in the "re-united Germany" and I can fully understand why some would like to see the wall back again.
Freedom and democracy are wonderful words, unfortunately they are often used to describe forms of government which are truly not synonym. A wall for security may often be better than superficial phrases.
