After WW1 many villages in UK were full of widows or families that lost sons or other male relatives, the only males in many were either very young or very old. Those maimed or suffering from shell shock were thrown on the scrap heap, many maimed ex soldiers were reduced to selling matches on street corners. So much for a "Land Fit For Hero's"
