larsrq is right about underestimating the PRC. Don't estimate the capability of the PLA and the PRC.

Remember what McArthur said when U.S. troops were near the Yalu River in Korea? Huge miscalculation. Even so PLA was at it's infancy and their military was rushed into training, the fully mechanized U.S. military couldn't withhold the rushing human wave tactics. (Although PRC had technical and economic aid from the Soviet Union)

I know that it sounds stupid but they are very disciplined, the views on taking casualties are not the same as in the western world. It is more acceptable to take heave casualties.
Although it is true as demonstrated in past conflicts, I doubt they will accept heavy casualties for tactical success in the future.

The things is that heavy casualties for them isn't the same as heavy for us.

I don't like to go into numbers but it do come from different approches to human life, loyalty to the state and so on. It is partly the same in Russia but they are coming closer to the western views of it now. It will take very long time before the Chinese change there views.

Well, it might not be that long that you might think. China is westernizing in both economically and socially and that will change how people will view the values of life.

china is changing,
sadly, the tradition of 2000 years of Confucius teaching is still among the chinese ppl ( a top rule is to obey the emperor)

one good thing about Soviet Union is that it changed peacefully (almost ) to a demoractic society and market economy,

china is changing too, but not as radical as Russia is,
prehaps in the future, china will transform itself into a democratic nation as russia did, then it wil become a super power

ai ya...its politcial system is still not democratic

until the government structure changed, no matter how good the economy is, there will always be super huge number of corruption and wasting of resource and money

Individually, China has the potential to become more powerful than the Soviet Union alone ever was. Currently, China has economically and industrially surpassed the old USSR in every category besided advanced technology.

Diplomatically ... well, not many nations trust them and their list of dependable military and diplomatic allies is pretty sort -- just North Korea. If they were to take some drastic steps to become more democratic and less feared, the possibilities are endless. Currently, the people of the People's Republic of China yearn to re-establish themselves as the Middle Kingdom once more -- this time to the whole world. Without resolution to their diplomatic circumstances, they may individually surpass whoever they like, but their culture and influence will not become any more relevant to the world as a whole.
