Winter War photos

Finland is celebrating its 100 years birthday this year. The December 6th 1917 they declared their independence. It doesn't sound so old in an European context. Finland belonged to Sweden for a very long time, but after the war of 1809 between Sweden and Russia, it became a part of Russia. When the Russian launched their revolution, Finland got its long deserved independence. But it started pretty bad with a civil war between the white and the red. The red lost the civil war. The fighters for the red side paid for it and still most Finnish families know which side their relatives fought for. Many years later another war when the Soviets attacked Finland in what is known as the Finnish-Russian winter war between 1939-40. When the peace treaty was signed, Finland lost 10% of its country and a lot of young men. However, the hardships and maybe poor political decisions the Finns sides with the Germans when they attacked Soviet Union to get the 10% back

But at the 6th of this month we can raise our glasses and say; happy birthday Finland, I hope your hardships are over

Germany isn't as old as most people seem to think either as it was only unified in 1871.

True, most people don't even know Germany is a federal state. The Czech republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Belarus, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Kosovo are also quite new.
 
True, I bring these things up a lot locally as people use our age as a nation (established 1840) to justify our lack of desire to progress.

While Europe has a long history in terms of civilisations the national borders we recognise today have changed vastly through the centuries.

We might get a new country in Europe pretty soon. The Spaniards seem to be quite upset about what is going on in Catalonia.

The Spaniards want you to be a part of the civilized world and drive on the correct side of the road.

It was amusing when the RM "invaded" Spain during a beach assault exercise. They were supposed to assault a beach in Gibraltar, but they didn't. Map reading is a tricky business.

It is pretty hard to take the Spanish claim over Gibraltar seriously though while they refuse to give up Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco.

We drive on the CORRECT side of the road, its you lot who drive on the wrong side.;)

Typical, they should have used a RAF Regiment gunner to navigate, far more intelligent then the average RM.:mrgreen:

Yep, Simo Häyhä, a Finnish sniper

Tuberculosis was also called the white death due to how pale the patents/victims were before the forever sleep
