--US regards China's Dongfeng-21 to be a threat to it, so it decides to spend $1 billion in updating its Aegis.

Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) on Monday said a $1 billion five-year U.S. Missile Defense Agency contract it won last week underscores the growing importance of its Aegis ballistic missile defense system.

Under the contract for continued development and evolution of the Aegis system, which runs through Dec. 31, 2014, Lockheed will design, develop, integrate, test, deliver and install further Aegis BMD capability for the U.S. and allied navies.

Currently 21 Aegis BMD-equipped warships -- 19 in the U.S. Navy and two in Japan's -- can engage ballistic missiles and perform long-range surveillance and tracking missions. The U.S. Navy is modifying two additional U.S. East Coast-based Aegis-equipped ships to perform ballistic missile defense.

There are a total of 92 Aegis-equipped ships in use around the world, including Australia, Japan, Norway, South Korea and Spain, but many are looking to add the ballistic missile defense capability given growing concern about that threat and especially China's work on developing maneuvering warheads.

DongFeng 21 (CSS-5) Medium-Range Ballistic Missile

The DongFeng 21 (NATO code name: CSS-5) is a two-stage, solid-propellant, single-warhead medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) system developed by China Changfeng Mechanics and Electronics Technology Academy (also known as 2nd Space Academy). The missile design is based on the two-stage JuLang 1 submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM). The DongFeng 21 is capable of delivering a 500kT nuclear warhead over a distance of 1,800km. Some DongFeng 21 missiles are reportedly armed with a conventional warhead. The improved DongFeng 21A with extended range was reportedly introduced in 1996. China has also developed the Kaituozhe 1 (KT-1) space launch vehicle based on the DongFeng 21 design.
