Norwegian police: US embassy in Oslo and the royal palace are evacuated due to bomb scare

OSLO, Norway — The U.S. Embassy in Norway was evacuated on Tuesday after its security staff found a suspicious object beneath a nearby automobile.
Norwegian police said the embassy and the surrounding area, including the royal palace, were cleared of people in the heart of Norway’s capital, and that a bomb squad with sniffer dogs was dispatched there.

U.S. Practice Bomb Responsible for Norwegian Scare, Police Say


A practice bomb used by the U.S. embassy in Oslo was responsible for the scare today that led to the evacuation of parts of central Oslo for two hours, according to police.
“The car has been used for internal practice purposes at the embassy and the find can be linked to this,” the police said in an e-mailed statement.

U.S. 'fake bomb' triggers embassy alert in Norway

(CNN) -- A fake bomb attached to a vehicle as part of a terrorism drill by the U.S. Embassy in Oslo triggered a security alert at the embassy Tuesday, a Norwegian police spokeswoman said.

The U.S. Embassy had a rehearsal for a terrorism incident last week, spokeswoman Siv Alsen of Norway's Police Security Service said.

They "used fake bombs, and one of those bombs was not removed" from the vehicle it was attached to, Alsen said.

U.S. Embassy staff had alerted police to the presence of a "suspicious object" under a car parked near the Embassy building Tuesday morning.

The area was evacuated and a cordon put in place 500 meters around the U.S. Embassy, police spokesman Bjorn Jorgensen said.

The object was then discovered to be a mock device.

Hehe, you can be pretty sure about that when they discovered that it was fake AND forgotten by the embassy personell.. :smil:

To make things worse it's only a few days since the anniversary for the terrorist attack here in Oslo last year, and the police and other security agencies had been worried that some loonie may try to do something around that date.
So this was probably the worst possible time to forget a fake bomb in a car i the Oslo area...

The US embassy is only around a kilometre away from where the car bomb went off last year as well, so this was quite a shock for everyone involved...


I wonder if "someone" from the US embassy is on the first plane back to the US tomorrow... :cool:
