Two killed by mortar fire on Baghdad Shiite neighbourhood

BAGHDAD, Sept 19, 2006 (AFP) - Two people were killed and 16 wounded Tuesday
when insurgents fired four mortar rounds into the south Baghdad Shiite
neighbourhood of Abu Dishr, a security official said.

Abu Dishr lies within the largely Sunni district of Dura, an insurgent
bastion where a massive security operation was conducted by the US and Iraqi

Insurgents have continued to mount deadly attacks in Baghdad despite a
security crackdown in force since mid-June.

Baghdad is the epicentre of a tit-for-tat sectarian conflict between the
newly empowered Shiite majority and the ousted Sunni Arab elite that has
left thousands dead since February.
