For German readers:

I have made an entry yesterday about the attack on Eduardo Puelles and the background as I see it, in my personal blog:

http://ohlmer.es/blog/716

It is about time this terrorist mafia (and that is what ETA truly is, forget the political goals, its all about the money they make through their "Revolutionary Tax" extorsions) is erradicated from the heart of the Basque society.

As Patxi Lopez said: "They show us the way of suffering, we show them the way to prison"!

Stop ETA!

ETa has had the opportunity to go into democratic life and they did´t. There is no explanation just that they like killing. They are killers under mask of politician fighters, but just killers.

As we say it in Spanish "Contra ETA metralleta"

I am not talking more about this because my blood boils.

Solideo,

while quite along with you on the description of the situation, I differ in analysis:

There (from my POV) *are* other explanations for their attacks (and I have the hunch that "liking to kill" is too simple an explanation anyway), the central explanation can be found in the dough aspect:

When the Zapatero (socialist) government started (what I and many others thought to be serious - from ETA side, they surely were well if naive meant from state side -) negotiations in 2007, they offered to the terrorists that would lay down arms the incredible amount of 1.500 Euros per person, *monthly*, for 10 yrs....!!! For re-integration into society.

(The following assumes the government would have followed up the promise):

I mean, even as a small entrepeneur I just earn that, and I do not have it guaranteed for 10 yrs, the minimum wage in Spain is around 750 IIRC, so we are talking halfway serious money here (and without obligation to pay it back, or not work at the side, or else...).

Not saying this has to be a bad idea, basically: Many conflicts can be solved through payments, and in the end just the life of the guys killed sine the negotiations (8+?) would easily have justified those payments that would have cost, what? 18 Millions for 10 years? (think Gulf I war: having offered 1 Million US$ to every Iraq soldier that had layed down arms, going along with offering them free stay in the US, would maybe have saved some 500 US soldiers lifes and more than 1500.000.000.000 $ the war cost until now, at a cost of max - assuming a total of 1 Million Iraq soldiers - 1000.000.000 $, that is lkess than 1 per mille...)

This COA worked in Northern Ireland with the IRA, did not work here with ETA:

ETA coupula denied the offer, claiming that they were "earning *much more* currently"... (Source: El Mundo articles revealing the process of the negotiations as I recall them that I summarize here)

That´s your explanation: It is a Mafia, in it for the money, exploiting young mislead idealists for dough (those Abertzales just go to prison and don´t earn anything), keeping going on killing to assure the dough keeps flowing, and nothing else.

Scum. And of the worst kind.

My 2c,

Rattler

This sort of thing is very common. Like in Aceh in Indonesia, they pretend like it's really about self determination but it isn't really. Again, it's about the tax and also resources in their land.
