The April 1938 Plebiscite in Austria: Hitler’s Second Visit to Vienna
Everyone who writes about the Anschluss quotes the same number: 99.73 percent of Austrians voted yes on 10 April 1938. Far fewer people ask how that number was produced. In the four weeks between the annexation and the vote, some 360,000 people — around 8 percent of the electorate, among them roughly 200,000 Jews — were simply struck off the voting rolls. The ballot paper fused two separate questions into one and gave 'Ja' a visibly larger circle than 'Nein'. My new article follows those four weeks in detail: Hitler's last election campaign, fourteen cities in sixteen days, his second and much less remembered visit to Vienna on the eve of the plebiscite, and every location as it looks today. 50+ photographs, archival and my own.
