BEIJING, China (AP) -- In a new twist to the Asian security picture, China and India were set to begin their first-ever joint naval exercises off Shanghai's coast on Friday.
The exercises are also the boldest step yet in the steadily improving relationship between the giant neighbors and former foes.
Three Indian navy ships are joining the maritime safety and search and rescue exercises, which also will include helicopters and fixed wing aircraft, according to Indian media reports.
China has not announced which of its craft will participate, and its Defense Ministry has not permitted foreign media to view the exercises.
"We believe that this cooperation will further enhance friendly relations and improve further understanding between the two sides," Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Thursday

 hmmmmm.................while these excersises has little military iimplication ...............but signs of improvement of ties maybe..............if these type of excersises continue both would get to know each other ............and incerased interoprabality..................good signs for the regionWhile the maneuvers are militarily insignificant the naval cooperation is
seen as deeply symbolic for two countries still mending ties after a 1962
border war.
"Its historic significance lies in that the two countries are beginning to
act upon and get to know each other," R.P. Suthan, Eastern commander of the
Indian navy, told the government mouthpiece People's Daily.
