GERMAN CEMETERY NEAR KYIV: DEATH OF WEHRMACHT IN UKRAINE 1941-1944

For a Ukrainian, writing and sharing articles, particularly about Ukraine and its history in WW2 is notedly important to me. The history of Wehrmacht war efforts, occupation, and death on Ukrainian soil in 1941-1944 is generally not as broadly analyzed as other aspects of the Eastern front. In this exhaustingly detailed 9000-word article, I tell the history of the German invasion of Ukraine in 1941, the key battles, the retreat in 1943-1944, the Wehrmacht death toll on the Eastern front and particularly in Ukraine, the commemoration practices. The second part is devoted to five large German cemeteries in Ukraine and notedly to the one near Kyiv with 26,000 burials. As always, more than 100+ archival photos from the period mixed with modern pictures of the cemetery which I took in 2022.

I hope this material will find its audience. Don’t hesitate to leave comments, questions, and suggestions.

Mid way through 2024 I have to be in Germany for work and we are looking at taking a 3-4 week vacation afterward around eastern Europe.

Basically, the Baltic States down to Hungary and if possible, I would like to visit at the very least Western Ukraine (don't really want to expose the kids to a war zone or get in anyone's way) so we thought Lviv down to Odessa and across into Romania from there although I am hoping to see Kyiv as well and this would be worth a visit.

As someone with an interest in battlefieds I had hoped to visit Crimea and Balaclava as well as several of the WW2 Eastern front sites but visiting Russia was abandoned after the 2014 invasion of Crimea so as they say Russia can go F*** itself.
