A U.S. district court judge in Texas sentenced a former Army reservist to 10 years in prison for conspiracy, bribery and money laundering in awarding government contracts in Balad, Iraq, the Justice Department announced yesterday. It is one of the longest sentences given in a case involving government contracting connected with Iraq.
John Allen Rivard, 48, admitted in July that from April 2004 through August 2005, while deployed in Iraq, he helped steer contracts worth $21 million to a company to do construction-type work in exchange for a bribe, the department said in a statement. Rivard said he received $220,000 in bribe payments and said he sent money to other conspirators in the United States to launder the proceeds from the scheme.
