Former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, making her first public appearance since narrowly escaping an assassination attempt Thursday that killed 136 people, warned Sunday that Taliban and al-Qaida militants have gained ground in Pakistan. But she said the bombing could unite her and other forces opposed to extremism, including Pakistan's military ruler, President Pervez Musharraf, with whom she has been negotiating a possible power-sharing deal. Bhutto called for an independent inquiry into the Thursday attack and repeated her assertion that extremists had infiltrated the government's security apparatus.
