My main reason for joining is to discover when (and why) US Army rank badges changed from the old down-pointing bar/s to the modern upward-point bars and the associated rockers.

Can anyone help?
 
I think it was due to the fact that the Brits/Aussies/Kiwis have them pointing down, the Yanks wanted to be different, after all, they had a war to get rid of British rule so why should their rank to look the same.
 
Welcome moneyspider. I'm still hacked off about changing all the Specialist ranks, above E-4, to stripes and rockers. Now, the Army is doing away with class A greens to dress blues.
