WHILE I WAS AN INSTRUCTOR at the Marine Corps Engineer School at Camp Lejeune, N.C., I was teaching a map-reading class. "What are the different types of azimuths?" I asked my students, referring to a measurement of distance from the poles, used in navigation and surveying. "Grid azimuths" was one answer. "Magnetic azimuths" was another. Then, from somewhere in the back, came: "Bronchial azimuths."
