Canada’s Minister of Public Safety, Mr. Gary Anandasangaree: A Personal Reflection and Political Context

Irreplaceable Intelligencer
Brothers and Sisters,

I know this post is a personal reflection, but I want to pray for Canada. Please share this widely within your connections because we are talking about the national security of Canada. I published this article today: After reviewing my manuscript in 2010, Gary Anandasangaree—then serving as legal adviser to the Canadian Tamil Congress and now Canada’s Minister of Public Safety—explicitly advised me not to refer to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) as a terrorist organization. He explained that, in his view, there was no universally accepted definition of terrorism at the United Nations, and therefore, such labeling could be problematic. This conversation took place in the context of broader debates within Canada’s Tamil diaspora, and Mr. Anandasangaree’s longstanding ties to advocacy organizations with sympathetic views toward the Tamil nationalist cause have recently come under renewed scrutiny. As noted by columnist Jamie Sarkonak, Anandasangaree’s past affiliations have raised questions about his suitability to oversee Canada’s national security portfolio:
