The Army says it is unnecessary to add an old Fort Detrick dump site to a list of the nation's most polluted places.
In a letter obtained by the Associated Press yesterday, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army Addison Davis told the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the Army plans to cap the source of-water contamination in the spring. Davis also criticized the EPA's characterization of the potential health threat to nearby residents from toxic industrial chemicals that have leaked into the ground water.
The EPA said chemicals were found in eight private wells in 1992. The Army said affected homes are receiving public or bottled water.
