I doubt they will surpass the skunk works. They can only build what they steal.

They are stealing completed projects, not the stuff that hasn't come out yet. When they have acquired the abilities to make this stuff on their own is when when we need to start worrying. They make cheap immations let alone the real thing at this point. They are implementing projects the US was in the 70s and 80s.
That was the case not long ago. As luck would have it, the USA in particular gave China huge leaps in technology and industry of all sorts. China also has the MONEY they never had. Just 15 yr ago, China could not fight a war they could not walk to. That's no longer so. Greedy, shortsighted tycoons have been packing up whole industries and re-planting them in China. Now? We ain't that self sufficient industrial giant from WW 2...the US currently has no operational ability to make things as fundamentally American as a basketball shoe, a television,a desktop computer. That stuff IS made in China.
China now has the know how to do materials,to do electronics,to build production facilities, and they have the money to invest in MORE progress while we debate what to slash. This trend has happened before in history.
"Chinese Communism" is pretty much a facade now. They have been hard core capitalists but with a long range viewpoint and a loyalty to the nation's fortunes and future. The US meanwhile has veered toward a form of corporate feudalism as the arisocracy gets richer and the middle class slides toward being modern day peasents. The nations assets get diverted offshore where the rich still get rich but the trickle down..trickles down to someplace else. China is building infrastructure at an unprecedented rate...freeways,dams,power plants, factories, skyscrapers. Here? The hot agenda is tax cuts for the rich. ....after all, the rich need more money. That's the whole POINT..huh?
So...I was near the Golden Gate at a friends a few times and I'd see those giant container ships coming in..the size of an aircraft carrier, stuff stacked on the decks. I saw them often. What I did not see...was OUTBOUND ships with stuff stacked on the decks. Odd...I know those ships go back for a reload...but do they go back empty?
I guess we could fill it with sacks of wheat and corn. The US makes damn good craft beers...WAY better than Tsing Tao...but an irony is that Craft brewers have more DEMAND than supply now...and have trouble getting funding to expand.
Maybe we could take in China's laundry. With them all having jobs, they are pretty busy.
So...China can and WILL rapidly improve their military hardware and will pretty much be a dominant force in the Far East. Them beating us to a high performance DEPLOYED stealthy fighter...will be one notable benchmark on the way. The good news is that China is doing so damn well on a peaceful path they don't have much incentive for military aggression.
