ISIS's strength is that they are a group dedicated to brutality, they are not a group dedicated to taking, holding and ruling land, in my opinion they are little more than a psychopathic death cult.
I would also argue that they were not really that much to begin with, the best thing you could say about them is that they are as good as a much weakened Syrian army and better than a rather pointless Iraqi army.
No, ISIS is very much about taking and ruling land. It's what makes them very different from Al-Qaeda. If ISIS loses all of its territory, its "legitimacy" will be largely lost. Unless they evolved into something completely different that is.
