I came across this story and it is rather interesting. The majority of the volunteers from occupied countries were highly motivated and also provided the allies with "local" knowledge and spoke the language without any accent.

I have only found a few news articles about it.

The occupied countries had those who supported the Germans and also fought on the German side. Especially in the SS, which I view somewhat as the German Foreign Legion. I remember a French joke about it. "We all admire those who joined the resistance in 1947"
