WW2 > Italy > post-Rome stats: Mark Clark rotting in Hell?

What are the statistics for the deaths and casualties from Rome to the surrender in Italy? Especially the Gothic Line campaign.

I am trying to get a handle on how many people paid the price for Mark Clark's decision to "take" Rome and let the German army escape.

If you add to that the casualties at Anzio, Monte Cassino, and the Rapido River - who's sacrifices he squandered - then he has to be one of the worst WW2 commanders.

I just want to get an idea of the scope of the decision.

Without knowing the exact numbers, there is little doubt in my mind that this was one of the worst decisions by an allied commander of the entire war and I agree his performance throughout the entire Italian campaign should give him a rating close to the worst allied commander of WW2.

My father was a Bren Carrier driver at Anzio. Because of a lot of gullies he had to stay back on the beach. He later burried his mortar crew. Why they didn't pick a Patton type officer to this type of operation is a mystery.
