Topic: WW1 : The Farce of the Somme

During the heaviest fighting of the battle of the Somme (Sep 1916), there was a young man fighting in a british infantry division on the front-line. out of his whole platoon, only he and two other men survived. the two others were killed, and a platoon of Germans were rapidly advancing on "Jack" 's position. Jack decimated almost three quarters of the platoon, and then ran out of ammo for the MG. he had no ammo for his rifle, so he jammed the rifle across the trench so that he could gain an advantage on the germans and run and ask another regiment for help. after he and a small unit of allies killed the remaining germans, "jack" was summoned to the quarters of the division senior officer.

after all his bravery and courage, "jack" was arrested and shot for "desertion" because he had "thrown away" his rifle in the face of the enemy.

what a bloody farce.

Mark Conley
almost as bad as the Napolean story:

The ship that was taking Napolean to his exile encountered high seas, and was rolling terribly. A gun, on its carraige, got loose: the gun capatain finally managed to get on the cannon, securing the device so that it would roll no more on the deck.

It was said that Napolean gave the man his own military honor off his chest for his brave act: then turned around and ordered the man shot for his derliction in duty that allowed the cannon to get loose in the first place.

Yep, defitnetly a weird world

The most insanity was from the officers who ordered attacks on 11 11 18. More men died on the last day of WW1 than on DDay. Bastards.
