This will be a hard one as the phrase has been used a lot, from Charles Dickens - Great Expectations to Bryant McGill on his writtings however as you are Australian I will try the logical first and go with Ned Kelly's last words, said while standing on the scaffold in 1880.

Nice try. The guy I am looking for is Irish and could be considered a bit of a maverick. What he says is a true description.
