The United States is nearing a deal with the Czech Republic to install a radar base on Czech soil as part of a missile shield in Eastern Europe.
At a conference in Washington, John Rood, the State Department's undersecretary for arms control and international security, said negotiations could be wrapped up within days "with a final burst of activity."
Rood said he also was optimistic that negotiations with Poland to install interceptors as part of the same system designed to protect Europe and the United States from missiles launched from the Middle East or Iran could be completed soon.
