BAGHDAD - Iraqi insurgents have killed another two US marines, coalition
headquarters said Thursday, bringing to 16 the number of American personnel
killed this week in a dramatic surge in casualties.

"Two marines assigned to Regimental Combat Team 7 died on October 4 from
enemy action while operating in Al Anbar province," a statement said,
referring to a Sunni region of western Iraq that is a hotbed of rebel
violence.

The announcement of the latest deaths came as US Secretary of State
Condoleezza Rice paying a surprise visit to Iraq, urging an end to the
brutal wave of violence engulfing the country and promising that the "US
will be a committed friend for Iraq".

The deaths brought the number of US troops killed in action or in accidents
while involved in Operation Iraqi Freedom since the March 2003 invasion to
2,731, according to an AFP tally based on Pentagon figures.
