Philippine officials suspended attempts by more than 100 divers, including eight U.S. servicemen, to retrieve bodies from a sunken ferry because of toxic chemicals in the hold. Vice President Noli de Castro said 22,000 pounds of the pesticide endosulfan intended for pineapple plantations went down with the ferry when it capsized in a typhoon Saturday. It remains unclear how many of the 850-plus passengers and crew were trapped in the vessel. Only 56 survivors have been found, while 146 bodies have washed ashore or been recovered at sea.
