IN 1944, my ship, the USS Centaurus, sailed west from Pearl Harbor, and one of my duties as a junior officer in the Coast Guard was to help censor the men's mail. Their letters to their wives and girlfriends were long and eloquent. Correspondence with the family, however, was apt to be more to the point. "This ship," wrote one seaman, "has now run out of paint, thank God."
