I think so, I could be wrong but last time I opened a panel on a Phantom it was the second fastest thing in the sky, the SR71 was on top of that food chain.

What do you mean by strong? There are so many different types of aircraft that even if one plane excels in a certain role it may be totally unsuited for others.

For example, if you mean the strongest air superiority fighter overall, one might say that's the F-22 Raptor. If you mean the strongest transport aircraft then that might be the C-5 Galaxy or one of those Antonovs. But obviously these planes can't switch roles!

Believe it or not the strongest air superiority fighter in service today is the FA-18 Superhornet, As for transports, teh C-5 is impressive yes, it can carry more than any others, but its not as rugged as a C-130, plus a C-130 can land in 1/3 of the runway of a C-5.

In what way is the FA-18 superior to the F-22 in air to air?

Wolfen, you missed my point. The thread creator never specified what he meant by "strongest" so there are too many possibilities to discuss something.

And even though I'm a Navy guy, the F-22 clearly outclasses the F/A-18 (and the F-14, and the F-15, and the F-16, and every other 4th and 4.5 generation aircraft out there). Stealth, supercruise, thrust vectoring, incredible beyond visual range engagement capabilities... Do any of these ring a bell?

In fact MiG-25 was faster than F-104... 2,82 M vs. 2,2 M...
