LA PAZ, Bolivia - One spectator was killed and at least 16 others injured Thursday night in a human stampede during a soccer match near the Bolivian capital.
The crush of bodies caused the suffocation of a 35-year-old woman.
Police commander Miguel Vasquez told reporters Friday that authorities were investigating whether the game was oversold and whether there was sufficient security.
Bolivian media reported, citing witnesses, that about 45,000 fans crammed into Hernando Siles stadium and that 5,000 more people with tickets were unable to enter because of lack of space. The capacity of the stadium was not immediately known.
The match between Bolivar and The Strongest ended in a 1-1 draw.
